Frances Bean Cobain at the Twilight world premiere,

Hollywood, 2008.

Now nineteen, Frances maintains a relatively low profile in LA’s Silverlake neighborhood, where she recently purchased a home for a reported $1.8 million. According to sources familiar with her finances, Frances receives $100,000 a month from her trust. She also travels frequently to New York, where she’s enrolled in art courses at Bard College. She is said to be dating an aspiring rock star named Isaiah Silva, a twenty-six-year-old who is a dead ringer for her father. She sports a huge tattoo of the flamboyant author Quentin Crisp on her shoulder, and is fond of poetry and yoga.

Surrounded by a protective phalanx of lawyers and handlers, she’s proved adept at skirting unwanted media attention. Frances exhibits her art under the pseudonym “Fiddle Tim” to avoid trading on her family name. But her first show, in a small LA gallery, sold out before it even opened. Courtney called at the last minute to purchase a print, but she was too late to obtain one.

Forbidden from contacting Frances directly, Love tries to “communicate” with her daughter through Facebook and Twitter. Like most addicts with children, Love is alternately ashamed of and defensive about her shortcomings as a parent. “It’s not like anyone taught me how to be a mother,” she told me last June. “I never meant for this to happen to us. I raised her the best way I knew how.”

But now that her daughter is no longer present in her life, Love has become a mentor and maternal figure to Micko Larkin, a prodigious guitarist who worked with the band Florence + the Machine before hooking up with Love in 2007 to collaborate on Nobody’s Daughter. The two were nearly inseparable for several years. She praised him as the best guitarist she had ever worked with, and paid personally for his rehab. But Micko, too, has had difficulties with Love. He recently returned home to London, heeding the warning of a counselor at his latest rehab. “You’re still just a kid,” she reportedly told him. “You’re too young to be shacked up with Norma Desmond.”
